Look with care

Group Exhibition
April 2022 - May 2022
Sheila C Johnson Gallery, New York, NY

The Partition that divided India and Pakistan in 1947, and the effects of colonisation on India, specifically Indian women are still predominant in my family. Along with the otherness caused by the partition for my ancestral inheritance, it has made me question my own cultural identity, and what it means to be an Indian woman. With ancestral history comes the inheritance of trauma and self hatred, Indian women have often been told that they are, and will never amount to the white beauty standards and femininity, having to use products such as skin whitening creams to feel worthy is a passed down family heirloom in many homes. I explore my relationships with my grandmother, my sisters and myself. Bringing to light effects of diaspora, colonised femininity and self-discovery. The title chosen is a command. I am asking the audience to look with care because of not only the sensitivity of the subject but also the lack of care Indian women have faced. Look with care is both a command and a plea, for you to take your time with the work and acknowledge the historical and cultural signifiers.
